Olympic disappointment and delight.

In 'the gods' at the Olympic Swimming Centre.

1 August 2012

A day at the games. We started at Olympic Park in anticipation of some exciting swimming action with the Aussie team surely ready to find some form. Hard to tell if they did or not as our vantage point was not brilliant. Oh well - off to ExCel again where we are virtually forced to access the venue via the pub - this time to watch the cycling time trial on our journey. No great expectations were held for the fencing but what a brilliant night. Crackers seats about 5 rows from the front on a slight angle but the action and drama was exhilarating. Semi finals, gold and bronze medal matches - USA raging favourites in both men’s and women’s events - coming away empty handed, this had it all. You would think that the Korean woman coming from 13 to 7 down (first to 15) to beat the USA competitor who had not lost at 3 Olympics would be enough of a highlight. Bring on the men and Venezuelan Rubén Dario Limardo Gascón who won Venezuela’s first Gold Medal since 1968 against their traditional rivals Norway. An extremely excited Venezuelan supporter who appeared to be part of the official team was shaking hands and hugging all in sight - bumped him again on the tube going home.

Venezuelan fencer - Gold medal and emotion.
