History “borrowed” and history made “Aussie style”.

Aussie Womens' basketball team. Content with bronze.

11 August 2012

Olympic gold. A well earned later start as our event today was the women’s basketball gold medal match scheduled for 9 pm. As usual though we would cram as much in as possible and on the itinerary today we were able to fit in the National Library and the British Museum. We had a bonus at the Library as there was an official Olympic torch and stamp exhibition in the forecourt. Could have spent way too long here but I was kept on the move and after a lovely lunch in the Bloomsbury area it was off to the museum. I was in absolute awe at some of the artefacts here including the Rosetta Stone, the discus thrower and an extensive mummy collection but took advice that larger and more comprehensive display existed on the continent.

We had determined that the hydrofoil to the basketball would be a pleasant option and after an extensive walk along the north side of the Thames which included the Brazilian Olympic team building we made our way to North Greenwich. The Aussie girls were playing Russia for the bronze earlier in the day and as we made our way to the pub adjacent to the arena entrance it was clear by the supporters there that they had been successful. What a sight - largish lads in full lycra body suits where clearly happy and intermeshed with more subtlety dressed but no less passionate supporters. Now for the real “Aussie” moment for me - the whole team was there having a few celebratory bevvies after arranging for themselves and their supporters to get access back into the arena for the medal presentation - love it. Oh - our tickets for the gold medal game were in a corporate suite - we survived okay.

Discus Thrower at the British Museum.
A breather at The British Library.
